ORIGINAL TYPEFACE “COORDINATE”

I wanted to create a thin, geo sans-serif typeface that is delicate yet modern and fun. Its minimalistic personality makes it a typeface that can be used for a variety of design purposes. The simplicity of the typeface as well as the rounded terminals give it a friendliness and openness that was inspired by Ms.Cutler’s personality. The typeface features unique elements like short cross strokes, thin width, short x-height, tall ascenders and curved descenders on some letterforms.

The name of my typeface has a dual meaning and can be pronounced one of two ways depending on interpretation. One meaning alludes to Ms.Cutler's current position as an advisor (who coordinates with students) and also her master's degree and interest in geography (geographical coordinates). I displayed this duality in my panels by including the two definitions along with geographical coordinates of Ms.Cutler's office.

OBJECTIVE: Create a functional, original typeface inspired by a Newhouse faculty/staff member to be displayed in an annual exhibit. I created the functional typeface “Coordinate” for Kristin Cutler, my academic advisor.

ROLES: Research, ideation, typographic design, print design.

TOOLS: GlyphsMini, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator

Characters Exhibit

My glyphs panel, specimen panel, and 3d printed letter was displayed in the lobby of Newhouse in 2020 as a part of the annual Visual Communications department exhibit (that features typefaces inspired by Newhouse staff and faculty “muses.")

This typeface received the Silver Award in the GRAPHIS New Talent Annual Competition 2021.
